Alge's Nature

Born at north of the municipality, in the civil parish of Campelo, at Alge’s Village, Ribeira de Alge goes sinuously by the landscape of rocks and green forest, finishing its trail at the calm waters of River Zêzere, already at the reservoir of the Dam of Castelo do Bode.

Crossing this stream, there are some places worth to refer due to the natural beauty that involves its bright waters. Not too far from its spring, we found a restored Trout Culture, where we must stop if we want to savour the typical gastronomy of trout and other freshwater fish.

Lower, in the civil parish of Aguda, we face with the majestic greatness of Fragas de S. Simão, whose corners invite to leisure and nature’s enjoyment. From its sightseeings, to its pedestrian trails, fluvial beaches, to the xisto’s village of Casal de São Simão, to the watermills of Além da Ribeira and to the countless available activities, such as fishing, mountaineering, alpinism and canoeing, we can delight ourselves with nature in its pure state.

Finally, at Foz de Alge’s Village, where the stream’s waters find the quiet outflow of River Zêzere, we can see the ruins of the ancient iron company, important work of the Industrial Archaeology, and with whose artillery Portugal fought against the French Invasions at the earlier 19th century.

Thus, we finish this brief yet divine trail that makes us regain our strengths to face the daily life again, due to its both harsh and calm nature.
